SHINE began offering programmes to manage obesity in children in September 2003 but one of the hardest things we found was building up the confidence in young people to gain the courage to join our courses. In 2007, the young people at SHINE came up with the idea of designing a health bus to get out into the community to raise awareness of healthy lifestyles and to meet young people face to face. They applied for a grant from National Youth Agency and with the help of Chilypep and Sheffield City Council they won an award for the best health project, presented in London by the Health Minister Beverley Hughes.

The Bus Design

The young people attended Coachworks in Faversham Kent and designed the layout, choosing materials and colours to  match the corporate identity of SHINE (blue and yellow).  The downstairs provides a nutrition and education centre, where we can deliver healthy eating sessions and food demonstrations, where young people take part in making yummie healthy smoothies.

The upstairs of the bus has been converted into a gym where young people are encouraged to take part in fun physical activities, including boxercise and games on the Nintendo Wii Fit! Free health assessments are available using the latest bio-impedance scales with full body composition feedback sheets.

Health Bus Activities

As well as working in the community, in parks and at local fetes, we have visited various schools throughout Sheffield and encouraged the young people to join in with our fun packed day. We can accommodate  up to 60 pupils per day in groups of 10 – 12 per hour which can be worked around the school time table.  The  young people are divided into two groups to get maximum benefits.  The first  group attend downstairs of the health bus for  half an hour in our educational centre discussing different types of  foods and fat and sugar contents in various snacks and drinks. They learn how to read nutritional labels in order to make healthier choices and they take part in the preparation and making of  a healthy smoothies.    The other group have half an hour  in our upstairs  gym, where they can  participate  in fun physical activities , various competitions on the equipment either rowing or biking, play boxing or bowling on the Nintendo Wii  and last but not least a physical boxing session to get their hearts racing. The groups then exchange to get the full experience.

We can adapt our delivery to meet a wide variety of needs and age groups.
